Topics Related to the AddBear and EditBear scripts

AIM

You can list your AIM handle.

Birth Date

This option lets us make a page of "Birthday Bears", but you can give us as much or as little information as you like. Just leave the parts you don't want to include blank.

If you enter ... ... what shows up on your profile page
January 1, 1966January 1, 1966
January 0, 1966January 1966
January 1, 0January 1
January 0, 0January
No Month 1, 19661966
No Month 0, 19661966
No Month 0, 0(nothing)

where "0" and blank are the same thing.

Club/Group Affiliation

If you belong to one or more bear clubs, you can list it/them here. If you supplied us your location, a box listing clubs by decreasing distance is given plus one that lists clubs alphabetically. You can select from either or both.

If your club isn't listed, or if you don't belong to a club, but have other connections to the bears community use the "Other Clubs" box to include that information.

Deleting a Profile

To remove your profile permanently, go to the Edit your profile page, and select the "Delete" option. Your profile name will be made available.

However, if you want to turn off your profile indefinitely, select the "Suspend" option on the same page. In this case, your profile name will be reserved for you, and all your information will remain intact. The next time you edit your profile, it will be re-activated.

Description

Here you can enter your stats, and your description (which doesn't have to be physical).

E-Mail Address

We need to know your e-mail address so that we can contact you if there are any problems, for example, if you've forgotten your password. We also (once in a great while) e-mail NetBears registrats to let them know about new services or substantial improvements to the existing services. (This happens about once a year.) We do not share email listings with anyone else. Ever.

Please remember to keep your database entry up-to-date with your current e-mail address!

Hobbies

This is a field to help bears who are, say, standard poodle enthusiasts, find other bears who are standard poodle enthusiasts. :-)

Husbear

If you and your partner are on NetBears, you can cross-link to each other's profile. Your pics will both appear on the right-hand column. It will also help to register what type of relationship you are in and the type of contacts interest you.

ICQ

You can list your ICQ number.

ICU II

You can list your ICU II handle.

Images

You can list two URLs that point to images of yourself! In NetBears V3.0 we store images at our end (so no broken images), and you can upload new images whenever you want.

PLEASE keep them to G/PG/PG-13/R rated! This avoids adminstrative complications at our end. Feel free to mention if you have other pix available in your personal message.

Languages

Another feature new to V3.0 are listings of the languages you know. This help bears identify potential "pen pals" and contacts while traveling. It also promotes the Resources for Bears as a truly international service (we hope). Listings of NetBears for every language except English are available.

One cool thing that some NetBears have done is to make their Personal Message multi-lingual. It's a great way to keep those language skills sharp, and meet some very interesting bears!

If we've neglected to include a language on the list, enter it under Other Languages. We'll keep an eye on the entries, and periodically add to the list of languages with buttons.

Link

On every bear's profile page is a "Link" button. If you are a NetBears member, you can use this to quickly attach this bear to the "Bears I Know" and "Bears I Like" listings on your own profile page.

Location

One of the hottest new features in NetBears V3.0 is the ability to search by location. You control how precise of your location to be shown. You can set values for:

  • Country
  • State/Province/Region within that country
  • City
  • Closest metropolitan area (Metro City, Metro State/Province/Region)
  • Additional description

First you'll be asked to identify your country using one of the pull-downs. For the US, Canada, and Australia, you'll also select your state/province/territory. You can also select to not enter any location information, in which case you'll skip to the Personal Information section.

If you select a country, you will then be prompted for your city and closest metropolitan area. If your city doesn't appear on the drop-down list, use the Other box.

Names (First and Last)

Our terms of service require that you provide your first and last name. This is for our protection so that we have some record of our interactions, and it protects you from having someone try to mess with your profile (by registering under your name). Therefore, we'd appreciate your cooperation in this matter. NetBears V3.0 lists you by your profile name and the option of also including your first name. Your last name will not appear on any publicly-viewable page, and we will not give it out (you already know who you are). If this arrangement is not acceptable, we are sorry that we cannot accommodate you.

NBCS (bearcode)

The Natural Bears Classification System (NBCS or "bearcode") is a tongue-in-cheek way to describe bears that some people like (and others despise). However, it is integrated into NetBears V3.0 because it can be used to match up bears very effectively. There are two buttons on the form you can use to construct your bear code. For those less familiar with it we recommend the "Simple" code. The button will pop up a window with complete instructions. Those who want to customize their entry further can use the "Complex" button, which has more options.

Password

Each entry in the NetBears database has a password. This is to prevent someone else from changing your record. It can be as simple as "mother's maiden name" but it shouldn't be something easily guessed, although it should be something you'll easily remember. If you have forgotten your password, visit the EditBear page and check the appropriate box. Your password will be e-mailed to the address you have given us when you registered.

NetBears I Know

This is another new feature for V3.0. You can now list your friends who are also NetBears (and they you). Over time this sets up a mini-web of bears, and you'll be able to follow the threads to friends of friends, and from there make new friends!

NetBears I like

This feature - new to V3.0 - allows you to assemble a list of bears you find interesting. It also allows people to get a sense of your tastes, and might encourage them to contact you.

Showing up in anyone's listings does not imply any sort of relationship.

Personal Message

You can include a short text message here such as a short greeting, or personal ad.

Please do not include raw HTML here if possible.

Privacy

Although we are a portal site, we are very concerned about personal privacy. We have strict policies about the release of any of our user's information (we don't do it), and have taken precautions to prevent the inadvertent disclosure of information. In particular, e-mail addresses are not listed on any profile pages, and our e-mail system does not permit spammers to harvest addresses for their nefarious uses. Once in a great while someone attempts to "spam" the NetBears list manually, but we're constantly thinking of ways to make that harder to accomplish.

Profile Name

NetBears V3.0 has made the switch to "profile names" instead of ID numbers. If you registered under V2.X, then what was in the nickname field was adopted as your profile name. If you didn't enter in a nickname or there was a conflict (see below) we created a profile name using your ID# (e.g., RfB0001).

Each profile name is required to be unique without regard to punctuation, word breaks, and case. Put another way, if you strip a profile name of every character other than letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens, it has to be unique in our database. The reason for this is that that string is what is used in your bearprofiles.com URL.

So, "Big Bear", "Bigbear", "BiGbEaR", and "+++BigBear+++" all reduce to "bigbear", and only one of them would be allowed. The one who has registered first and has not subsequently been deleted wins.

Please note: If you change your profile name, you give up your old one. If you suspend your profile, you do not give up your nickname, but if you delete your profile, your profile name does become available to someone else! If you let your registration lapse, your profile name will only be held for an undetermined period of time. We can't make exceptions to this, so please bear this in mind when making changes.

Relationships

One of the most-requested features for V3.0 was the ability to list one's relationship status and the types of relationship desired. We've added both of these items to the new database.

Relationship Status:
We've broken this down into several categories. Each NetBear may select one of the following:

  • Single, not looking for a relationship
  • Single, looking for a relationship
  • In a monogamous relationship
  • In an open relationship
If something is chosen it will appear on the list and profile pages, and it can be used as a search term.

Contacts Wanted:
A similar set of choices are available to indicate the types of relationships you are interested in persuing. However, in this case, more than one selection is permitted since someone might be interested in meeting people looking for a long-term relationship and making new friends too. Here the options are:

  • Friends only (no sex)
  • Friends/Playmates (sex possible)
  • Friends/Playmates (sex possible) - if single
  • Casual Dating
  • Monogamous Long-term Relationship
  • Open Long-term Relationship
As above, these are searchable.

Renewal

Your NetBears profile will remain active for one year starting from whenever you first register or make changes. We set an expiration date to encourage users to keep their profiles up to date, and to keep our site fresh. (Other sites might claim high numbers of registrants, but include people who haven't touched their pages in years.)

You will receive three reminders when your profile is about to expire, roughly 30, 10, and 2 days before the expiration date. To renew, simply visit the Edit your profile page (you aren't required to change anything), and you will be renewed for another year. Remember - every time you make any changes, the timer is reset to one year, so if you're keeping an up-to-date profile, it will never expire.

Suspending a Profile

If you want to turn off your profile indefinitely, select the "Suspend" option on the Edit your profile page. Your profile name will be reserved for you, and all your information will remain intact. The next time you edit your profile, it will be re-activated.

Be careful to not choose the "Delete" option on the same page, as it will remove your entry from the database and your profile name will become available to someone else.

Terms of Service

The last step in adding or changing your profile is accepting the terms of service. Simply check the appropriate box to complete the form.

Web Cam

If you have a webcam, you can list its URL here.
